[edit] General questions
[edit] What is Galactic Fleet Wiki?
- Galactic Fleet Wiki is a free content, freely editable online encyclopedia about everything Galactic Fleet.
[edit] Who is responsible for the Galactic Fleet Wiki content?
- You are! In fact, you can edit this very FAQ!
[edit] What keeps Galactic Fleets Wiki from being destroyed?
- Every Galactic Fleet Wiki article contains an edit history, which records all edits to the article since it was created. In case someone makes a bad edit (intentionally or not) by vandalizing the article, we can revert (restore) the article to an earlier, better revision.
[edit] What wiki software does Galactic Fleet Wiki use?
- Galactic Fleet Wiki uses MediaWiki, the same software as Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects.
[edit] Do I have to register?
- While registration is optional, it is strongly recommended. You can view pages as an anonymous user, but registration hides your IP address and gives you the ability to edit pages and upload files.
[edit] What are namespaces?
- Namespaces are large "storages" that group pages according to their function. Placing a page in a namespace causes the MediaWiki software to treat it in a special way. For example, this page is in the Galactic Fleet Wiki namespace, according to its prefix (Galactic Fleet Wiki:FAQ). Every namespace except Special (whose pages are generated by scripts on the fly, rather than being stored in the database) has an appropriate talk namespace, unless it is itself a talk namespace. For example, the talk page for the article named Main Page (located in the default namespace, without any prefix) resides at Talk:Main Page.
| Namespace | Talk namespace | Function |
|---|---|---|
| (default; no prefix) | Talk: | Articles: what we produce, and what a casual reader expects from an encyclopedia |
| Special: | (N/A) | Special pages: pages whose content is controlled by scripts, like statistics generated on the fly and control panels allowing users to perform certain actions like moving pages and editing preferences |
| User: | User talk: | User pages, where users can post their personal information if they so desire |
| Galactic Fleet Wiki: | Galactic Fleet Wiki talk: | Project pages: policies, guidelines and processes |
| Image: | Image talk: | Files (mostly images, but occasionally audio and video files) used on other pages |
| MediaWiki: | MediaWiki talk: | Messages and scripts providing customizable look and feel, only editable by administrators |
| Template: | Template talk: | Templates: short, parameterized messages that can be included (transcluded) on other pages to avoid repetition (see Chosen Space Wiki:Template messages) |
| Help: | Help talk: | Pages providing help for new users |
| Category: | Category talk: | Categories: groups of articles, images, templates or project pages by their content |
| Forum: | Forum talk: | Forum pages, controlled by the forum extension (this includes the Senate Hall, the Consensus track and the Administrators' noticeboard) |
Only the Wikia staff can add or remove namespaces or special pages. Neither regular users nor administrators can do that. The forum namespace is the only custom namespace so far.
[edit] Editing questions
[edit] What is the difference between red, blue and light blue links?
- Blue links point to existing pages (like Main Page), red links point to nonexistent pages (like MediaWiki:Nonexistent), and light blue links are either external or interwiki links: in short, links that are supposed to point outside Galactic Fleet Wiki.
[edit] How do I create a page?
- If you see a red link on an existing page and you want to create the page it points to, simply click that link and it will point you to the editing form. Type the content, then save the page. It will be logged in the recent changes with the bold letter N, which stands for "new".
- Alternatively, you can type the title of the page in the search box and press Go. If the page already exists, it will take you there, but if it doesn't, you can click the red link with the page title, and it will take you to the editing form.
[edit] How do I delete a page?
- Only administrators can delete pages, and only they can restore deleted pages. If you created a page accidentally and would rather get rid of it, do not blank it; blanking is considered vandalism and, if repeated, can get you blocked. Instead, tag it with the Template:Tl template (open these templates for usage instructions). However, if you accidentally uploaded the wrong image, there is usually no need to delete it: simply upload another one under the same name, and it will replace the original image.
- If you feel that a page that has a non-trivial edit history does not belong here, you can nominate it for deletion on Galactic Fleet Wiki:Votes for deletion. If the community agrees to delete it, an administrator eventually will.
[edit] How do I insert an image into a page?
- Please note only Admin's should upload and add Images to Wiki pages. This does not include player icons or symbols
- To insert a new image, you should first upload it, this can be done at Special:Upload (please check the policy on the same page first). After that, refer to Help:Editing for instructions.
- Please do not recklessly replace images in infoboxes, especially if it's a major and well-known character. These images are usually placed there by consensus, as a result of debates on talk pages, so if you're unsure, search the talk page (and its archives) first.
[edit] How do I insert [something] into a page?
- See Help:Editing.
[edit] Where can I discuss pages?
- Each page has a built-in discussion (talk) page, which can be accessed via the "discussion" tab. While discussing articles, please limit your posts to the article content, not the article subject.
[edit] How do I protect a page?
- Only an administrator can do that, so if you need a page protected or unprotected, leave a note on Galactic Fleet Wiki:Requests for protection. However, before doing so, ask if it's really worth it: protection is a last resort, and for articles, it should always be temporary. If the page is being constantly disrupted by a single vandal, it is probably better to block them instead (report vandals on Galactic Fleet Wiki:Vandalism in progress or via Template:Vip). However, in case of vandalism by multiple different vandals, or in case of an ongoing revert war, protection could be sometimes the only way to stop disruptive behavior.
[edit] Somebody reverted my edits, what should I do?
- Generally, not revert to your version in turn. This can start a revert war (also known as edit war), which is seen as disruptive because it prevents other contributors from improving the same article. Instead, question yourself whether the revert was justified, look at the edit history for the reason given, and try to settle the case on the talk page.
[edit] What is a minor edit?
- A minor edit is an edit that it is so non-noteworthy that users monitoring the article can usually skip it. Examples are spelling and grammar corrections, corrections of formatting and template usage. Addition and omission of content, as well as factual corrections, are not minor edits and should not be marked as such.
- If you accidentally marked a non-minor edit as a minor one, make a dummy edit (an edit that affects the source wikitext but not the output, like changing one space to two or vice versa), mark it as non-minor, and explain the problem.
[edit] What is a Major edit?
- These are edits on a very big scale, like re-writing the full page, deletion of links and such. These kind of Edits should be left to the Admin's to do as they have the finnal say.
- If you have a new and nice Idea instead of changing all on that page copy it and start a new page with your idea. That way if the Admin's like it they can add it right in. A expample of this is Main Page Test. It was made by a player tring to make the main page look good. But he did it on a test page instead of doing a total Re-Write.
[edit] Rules for Editing
The rules here are subject to change so please check back regulary.
[edit] Creating New Pages
- Before creating new pages please do a search of that page name as it may have one but is just plural or spelled differently.
- When adding the name for the page please capitize the name of the page.
- ie: """Fuel Rods""" the 2 common mistakes when making a new page is that they will make a page called """Fuel rods""" or """Fuel Rod""" these can all be the same topic but will all create a new and different page.
[edit] Uploading Pictures and adding to pages
- You are permitted to upload and add pictures in your player pages and Government/Faction pages no proplem.
- Do not upload and place or change Pictures in any other pages with out first getting permission from Torin to do so.
[edit] Minor Edits
Minor edits defined as fixing links, spelling grammer, adding new info updated info from the game is permitted within reason.
- If you do not think its right or think others will not think its right just Message Torin in game to check with him.
[edit] Major Edits
Major edits involving changing the complete page and such should alway ask Torin first.
[edit] Adding New Ship Page
The name of the page should be exactly what it is in the game.
So HU-TEAG 'Hunter' would be entered as "http://wiki.chosenspace.com/index.php/HU-TEAG"
Hunter should not be added into the page name.
Once the page is created then follow the instructions found on Template:Starship
Ship Yard pages will no longer be added into Wiki.
[edit] Adding New Factions Page
The name of the page should be exactly the way its listed in the game. So Exillis Rain Alliance would be entered as http://wiki.chosenspace.com/index.php/Exillis Rain Alliance
Then once the page is created added [[Category:Factions]] to the bottom of the page to have it included to the Category:Factions page.
